Discover the Makuya Primitive Trail, where the untamed beauty of the Lowveld meets the boundless freedom of the Kruger National Park. With no fences separating Makuya from Kruger, wildlife roams freely, creating a truly authentic Wilderness experience.
The Trail winds along the enchanting Levuvhu River, offering a refreshing change of scenery framed by dramatic sandstone cliffs and valleys. Towering, ancient baobab trees provide a striking backdrop as you venture into hidden springs and magical tributaries, uncovering the raw, untamed heart of this pristine landscape.
This is more than an activity – it’s a chance to connect with Nature on a deeper level. Unlike traditional safaris where you’re a spectator, this Primitive Trail invites you to be part of the Wilderness in which you walk, fostering personal growth, social connection, and a profound sense of renewal.

1. What wildlife can I expect to see?
The highlight of this experience is the awe-inspiring landscape you’ll immerse yourself in. The area is rich in birdlife, and while you may encounter elephants or antelope, the focus of the experience is more on the unique flora and trees, such as the majestic baobabs. This is a chance to connect with the smaller wonders of the Wilderness, from tracking wildlife to observing the intricate world of insects, tracks, and other fascinating details of Nature.
2. What is the sleeping arrangement on Trail?
Each night, you’ll sleep under the stars with only a sleeping bag—no tents, just you and the vast, starry sky. This unique experience deepens your connection to the ancient Wilderness. Participants also take turns sharing ‘night-watch duty.’
3. What is the terrain?
The terrain varies beautifully, starting with classic bushveld scattered with majestic Baobabs. As you move along, it transitions into denser riverine areas before giving way to rocky, rugged terrain as you enter the gorge. Each shift in landscape offers something unique, making the journey both diverse and captivating.
4. Is Makuya in a Malaria Area?
The Makuya Nature Reserve is located within a malaria area. However, this specific region is generally considered to be low-risk. Many of us who live and operate here do not take any formal medical precautions, aside from using insect repellent and staying alert for any symptoms.
Although the risk of contracting malaria is low, it’s always best to consult with your doctor before traveling to make sure you’re comfortable with the decision. Whether or not to take prophylactic medication during your visit is ultimately up to you, based on your personal health and preferences
5. How often will I have access to fresh water on the Makuya Primitive Trail?
Water is provided by the pristine Levuvhu River. You are welcome to bring water purification drops.
Makuya Nature Reserve has attributes not found in any other wild area of South Africa. The panoramic appeal is unsurpassed, with sandstone ridges lined by ancient baobabs flanking mile upon mile of Levuvhu River frontage. Although part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, with the potential of seeing all of the savanna species, animal numbers are low, and the focus of this Trail is not game- viewing. The arid spiritual landscape and powerful associated ‘Sense of Place’ more than makes up for the low animal densities.
