Makuya Nature Reserve shares a fenceless border wi Makuya Nature Reserve shares a fenceless border with the Kruger National Park near the Pafuri Gate in northern Limpopo Province. The Levuvhu river is the Reserve's life source and carves through an ancient sandstone landscape which is dotted with hundreds of baobab trees.

Makuya is home to a range of large and iconic mammal species such as Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Hippo and Hyeana. They are not abundant enough to guarentee seeing, but their presence certainly contributes to a hightened sense of awareness. Nevertheless, Makuya's appeal (for @lowveld_trails_co at least) is the awe-inspiring landscape, which includes magical tributaries of the Levuvhu River, natural inland springs and extremely high levels of biological diversity. The permanent water also provides a unique and very special atmosphere.

It's a great venue for 'Primitive Trails' and we are excited to show you around. Choose between a three, four, five or six night Primitive Trail.

The Makuya Primitive Trail is operational between April and November. Bookings now open admin@lowveldtrails.co.za

"Protected areas are often viewed as being mandate "Protected areas are often viewed as being mandated for the sole purpose of biodiversity conservation. Less acknowledged and explored is the way in which such places can enable life-changing experiences that may deepen people's personal relationships with non-human nature and motivate environmentally responsible behaviours. Critically, such experiences may enhance connections with protected areas that lend support to their conservation." - Zylstra, M. J. (2019)

If nothing else, COVID-19 has been our inescapable If nothing else, COVID-19 has been our inescapable reality check. It almost feels as if we’ve been sent to our room to think about our self-destructive behaviour.

Should we choose to take responsibility for our actions, then our behaviour in 2021 (and beyond) will have to be fundamentally different. This includes the way we choose to travel.

@lowveld_trails_co and @africa_trails_co explores 'regenerative travel'

Needs not Wants. We focus on needs and not Needs not Wants.

We focus on needs and not wants, paring things down to their most essential so people can have a direct and transformative experience of the natural world. In this way we can cultivate an appreciation for simplicity, silence, solitude and the opportunity for reflection that this brings. We know that the less you carry with you in life, the more you're able to connect ecologically, socially and psychologically.
