We're heading to Malawi | Majete Wildlife Reserve We're heading to Malawi | Majete Wildlife Reserve | @lowveld_trails_co will be providing Skills Development Training for Field Rangers (Game Scouts) who may need to lead or accompany research teams into areas with potentially dangerous animals.

Managing small groups of people while tracking, monitoring and observing target species such as Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo etc. requires a unique set of skills that may not have been covered sufficiently during the traditional counter insurgence or military-style training that is currently being provided to Field Rangers across Africa.

We will be focusing on the following during our upcoming training in Malawi. TRACKING - Track & Sign interpretation with special focus on target species. DEVELOPMENT OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS - Focus on developing all-round sensory awareness in order to pre-empt, recognize and avoid dangerous situations. HOW TO SAFELY APPROACH AND RETREAT FROM (AVOID) POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ANIMALS - identify and make use of environmental variables on offer in order to safely move among animals. Some variables include wind direction, sun position, cover, escape routes etc. HOW TO DEAL WITH CONFRONTATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS (SPECIES SPECIFIC) AND BEST PRACTICE TO GET THE GROUP OUT OF THE SITUATION SAFELY - Action, body language, group control etc.

These are some of the fundamental Trails Guide skills that we have been training in South Africa since 2016. We look forward to taking our experience and training beyond our borders.

Our Trails Guide Team is Growing | Welcome Lori Ci Our Trails Guide Team is Growing | Welcome Lori Cilliers | @lowveld_trails_co Apprentice Trails Guide starting July 2022.

"Living on a farm all my life, I've always been happiest outdoors. My passion for the bush was kindled at a young age and every opportunity to go hiking, camping or on a family 4X4 trip was snapped up with enthusiasm.

The one month Apprentice Trails Guide Course with Lowveld Trails Co. sent me 'head over vellies' for Trails. The experience made me value Nature to a whole new extent and gave me a glimpse of the incredible opportunities that lies ahead in the Trail space.

I am only just beginning my Trails Guide journey and I can't wait to fill my logbook with plenty of magical hours in the bush. I believe there is no better environment in which to live, to learn and to grow.

As much as I thrive off simple and natural ways of being, I especially love sharing such raw experiences with all the different people that 'Primitive Trails' attract. It makes me happy to see the positive effect these experiences have on individuals. Tuning into the subtleties of birds, insects, plants and the natural setting is special and encourages us to behave more positively and sustainably towards the source of our existence.

I am a dreamer with itchy feet which makes me particularly enjoy the Trails aspect of guiding. I look forward to improving my 'environmental literacy' by reading the intricate details of tracks and signs on the various animal paths I am yet to explore."

Welcome Lori, we wish you all of the best.
A savanna ecosystem may be considered a living sta A savanna ecosystem may be considered a living stage and example of our unique evolutionary heritage and culture. It's therefore understandable that the landscape holds great spiritual and physiological value to human beings. This may be more challenging to define than environmental products and services, but it doesn't justify ignoring such intrinsic value of biodiversity altogether.

Intrinsic means belonging to the thing in itself, or by its very nature; inherent, essential. Intrinsic value of biodiversity therefore describes the value that is independent of potential usefulness to humans. It provides a way of connecting to the landscape that acknowledges our need to use plants and animals, but constructs relationships beyond use.

Without human recognition of their position and role in the ecosystem, the environment will suffer and lose its sustainability. A savanna ecosystem without a band of nomadic humans within it, is not complete or sustainable. We desperately need more direct human-nature interaction in wild spaces.
