EXPERIENCE LOCATION

Loango National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wilderness areas – a place where dense equatorial rainforest meets sweeping savannas, vast wetlands, and untouched Atlantic coastline. Often called “Africa’s Last Eden,” it is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness forest elephants and buffalo walking along sandy beaches, hippos riding ocean waves, and lowland gorillas moving through ancient forests. Spanning over 1,500 square kilometers, Loango protects an astonishing diversity of wildlife and habitats, from mangrove-lined lagoons and sprawling grasslands to clear tidal estuaries and towering primary forests. This rich, dynamic landscape offers rare and unpredictable encounters, making it a sanctuary for those seeking true wilderness and a deeper connection to one of the planet’s last great ecological frontiers.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is in the form of rustic chalets with twin configuration. Each ensuite room has two beds and air-conditioning, as well as plug points to charge your phones, camera’s etc.

FAQ

1. What wildlife can I expect to see?

You’ll have the chance to encounter unhabituated chimpanzees, western lowland gorillas, red river hogs, forest sitatunga, and a variety of monkeys and forest duikers. Loango is also famous for rare spectacles like forest elephants and buffalo on the beach, and hippos surfing ocean waves. Birdlife is exceptional.

2. What is the sleeping arrangement on the Wilderness Trail?

During the 4-night unsupported Wilderness Trail, you’ll sleep in tents at pristine, wild locations with no set campsites –  just you, the rest of the group, and the forest around you. For the days before and after the Wilderness Trail, you will be accommodated at Sette Cama Camp, see more below

3. What is the terrain?

The trail moves through a dynamic mix of tropical habitats: dense rainforest, open savanna, swamps, mangroves, and tidal estuaries. The landscape is varied and moderately challenging, with sections of firm ground, muddy swamps, and soft coastal sand.

4. How often will I have access to fresh water on the Wilderness Trail?

Guides will identify and access clean natural water sources along the route. Water availability is sufficient, with regular opportunities to refill throughout each day.

5. What are the accommodations at Sette Cama Camp?

Before and after the trail, you’ll stay in rustic twin chalets with ensuite bathrooms, air-conditioning, and charging points for phones and cameras. The camp features a central living area with a stocked bar and a deck overlooking the Ndogo estuary.

6. What is the weather like in August?

August offers dry, cooler conditions ideal for exploration. Daytime temperatures range from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with cooler nights around 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). Humidity is lower, trails are drier, and wildlife activity is high – making this one of the best times to visit Loango.
