Our Wilderness Experiences invite you to explore Africa’s most untamed and iconic landscapes through a rare and deeply immersive approach to travel. Each experience is designed as a true engagement with a wild place – combining extended time moving on foot in remote spaces with the comfort of a carefully chosen base camp before and after the journey. Far beyond an activity, a Wilderness Experience offers the opportunity to slow down and become deeply familiar with equatorial forests, wild coastlines and vast miombo woodlands. Gently step into an ecosystem and discover the unique processes and wildlife that shape it. This is an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding, respect, and connection to the natural world – and yourself.
Explore Kafue National Park – Zambia, where vast floodplains, winding rivers, and ancient miombo and mopane woodlands shape one of the continent’s great Wilderness areas. Move quietly through this wildlife-rich landscape, and share space with some of Africa’s most iconic mammals.
Step into the heart of Africa, where equatorial rainforests meet untouched Atlantic shores. Explore Loango National Park, encounter diverse wildlife, and immerse yourself in a landscape untouched by civilisation.
Wilderness Experiences are led exclusively by our two most experienced guides and co-founders, Wayne Te Brake and Brenden Pienaar. Together, they bring over four decades of trails guiding experience and more than 30,000 hours on foot in Africa’s wildest landscapes. Both are among a small handful of FGASA Scouts – the highest designation in the field – and serve as FGASA Mentors, Assessors, and Trails Guide trainers. Their calm presence, deep ecological knowledge, and refined “soft skills” come from years of leading Primitive Trails in big game country. Guided by curiosity and a profound respect for wilderness, Wayne and Brenden facilitate experiences that are immersive, safe, and deeply meaningful.
The Lowveld Trails Co. Wilderness Rating system is a way of measuring the intrinsic value of an area. The system is based on a range of factors, including the ecological integrity of the area, the level of infrastructure, and the ambience or ‘spirit of place’. Furthermore, it provides participants with an opportunity to make informed decisions when choosing a Primitive Trail experience.
